Two Men Still Missing After Being Swept Away by Floodwaters in Limpopo

Search and rescue teams in Limpopo are continuing efforts to locate two men who were swept away by floodwaters during recent heavy rains in the province.

Authorities confirmed that a 36-year-old man was carried away by the Nwanedi River, while a 53-year-old man went missing earlier this month at Makuleke Dam in the Collins Chabane Municipality.

The Limpopo Provincial Disaster Management Centre, working together with several government departments and emergency services, has been conducting ongoing search operations while also providing assistance to communities affected by severe weather conditions.

The province has been experiencing persistent rainfall, which has caused rivers to overflow and damaged infrastructure in several areas. Floodwaters have also washed away a number of bridges, including three in Gumela village south of Musina.

Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Basikopo Makamu, has urged residents to remain cautious as the adverse weather continues. He warned the public against attempting to cross flooded rivers or using damaged bridges, noting that some residents have been sharing videos and images on social media showing dangerous behaviour during the floods.

Provincial government spokesperson Tsakani Baloyi said communities should remain vigilant while the severe weather persists.

“Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution as inclement weather continues. We have observed incidents where safety protocols are being ignored, which places lives at serious risk,” Baloyi said.

Authorities are encouraging community members to report emergencies immediately and cooperate with rescue teams to help prevent further loss of life.

Search operations for the two missing men are expected to continue while officials monitor weather conditions and assess damage in affected areas across the province.
