In a landmark sentencing that has brought a measure of closure to a grieving family and community, two hitmen have been handed life imprisonment for the brutal murder of uMngeni Local Municipality DA chief whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. The sentencing took place on Thursday, 3 September 2026, in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, where Khayelihle Shabalala and Thabo Mathonsi were convicted for their roles in a killing that shocked the nation.
Shabalala and Mathonsi pleaded guilty in July to charges of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu. Their guilty pleas came after a lengthy investigation into the December 2023 assassination, which took place at the councillor’s home in Mpophomeni, near Howick. Ndlovu was shot and killed in front of his wife and young children, leaving a lasting scar on his family and the broader community.
The court heard that the two men were hired as part of a broader conspiracy, but both expressed remorse during their plea proceedings. While their motive has not been fully established, it is believed that the killing was linked to political tensions and local power struggles. Three other accused are still awaiting trial.
Handing down the sentence, Magistrate Nombuso Khumalo condemned the murder as “a senseless act of violence that robbed a community of a dedicated public servant and a family of a husband and father.” She noted that the gravity of the crime, the premeditation involved, and the trauma inflicted on the victims’ family warranted the maximum sentence.
The sentencing has been welcomed by the Democratic Alliance and community groups, who described it as a victory for justice. Ndlovu’s widow, speaking outside the court, said, “I can finally begin to heal. My children and I have waited for this day.”
As the remaining accused await trial, the case has highlighted the dangers faced by local politicians and the need for enhanced security measures for public representatives. For the Ndlovu family, the life sentences represent a measure of accountability, even as their grief continues.
