South Africans are being urged to prepare for a wet and unsettled weekend, with several parts of the country expected to experience cooler temperatures, strong winds, showers and thunderstorms.
The South African Weather Service says a cut-off low-pressure system moving across the country could bring widespread showers and thundershowers, with the risk of severe thunderstorms in parts of the interior.
Gauteng, the Free State, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape are among the areas expected to experience windy and unsettled conditions. Parts of Gauteng, North West and the Free State could see severe thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning.
The weather system is expected to shift eastwards on Sunday, increasing the risk of thunderstorms over parts of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, with the possibility of extending into southern Limpopo.
KwaZulu-Natal is also expected to experience cooler and wetter conditions, with rain forecast in several areas over the weekend.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution, particularly where heavy rainfall could result in poor visibility, slippery roads and localised flooding. Residents are also encouraged to secure loose objects around their homes and stay indoors during severe thunderstorms.
Authorities are urging the public to keep monitoring updates from the South African Weather Service as weather conditions may change rapidly over the weekend.
