TRICKED AND KIDNAPPED: Nomsa Buthelezi-Shezi Lured by Fake Job Offer

In a chilling ordeal that has exposed the sophisticated and ruthless tactics of criminal syndicates, well-known actress and media personality Nomsa Buthelezi-Shezi was lured, deceived, and ultimately kidnapped in an elaborate plot that began with a seemingly innocent request for wedding décor.

The harrowing incident, which has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and left many South Africans questioning their own security, unfolded with the cruel precision of a staged drama. According to police reports and sources close to the actress, Buthelezi-Shezi initially received a phone call from a woman who presented herself as a desperate bride-to-be. The caller, polite and persuasive, claimed to be in urgent need of a decorator for an upcoming wedding, having seen Buthelezi-Shezi’s social media profiles and trusting her taste.

Always community-minded and keen to support small businesses, Buthelezi-Shezi saw an opportunity to assist. Thinking she was making a helpful referral, she put the caller in touch with a close friend—a trusted event decorator. Unbeknownst to her, this act of kindness was the first step into a meticulously laid trap.

The “client” engaged the decorator friend in detailed discussions, requesting a site visit to a venue in the Kempton Park area. On the day of the supposed meeting, the decorator—growing suspicious due to vague addresses and inconsistent communication—decided not to go alone and alerted Buthelezi-Shezi to her concerns. In a fateful decision, the actress, wanting to ensure her friend’s safety and perhaps salvage what she believed was a genuine business opportunity, offered to accompany her to the location.

It was there, at a seemingly ordinary address, that the fiction shattered. Upon arrival, the two women were not met by a nervous bride, but by a group of armed men. Buthelezi-Shezi and her friend were swiftly overpowered, forced into a vehicle, and taken to an unknown location. They had become victims of a kidnapping-for-ransom syndicate that uses fake business propositions to profile, lure, and abduct their targets.

For several agonizing hours, the women were held captive while the kidnappers negotiated with their families. The ordeal only ended when a multi-disciplinary police team, acting on intelligence and tracking leads, located the hideout and conducted a raid, freeing the two traumatised women. No ransom is believed to have been paid.

Captain Mavela Masondo, Gauteng police spokesperson, confirmed the details and issued a stark warning: “This is a modus operandi we are seeing more often. Criminals are using professional ruses—fake job interviews, business meetings, or property viewings—to target individuals. We urge the public to exercise extreme caution. Verify identities, be wary of meetings at unfamiliar locations, and always inform someone of your whereabouts.”

The incident has sparked outrage and fear, highlighting how easily trust can be weaponized. Buthelezi-Shezi, who is now recovering with her family, is said to be deeply shaken but resilient. Her experience serves as a grim lesson in a country where crime has taken on disturbingly inventive forms, reminding everyone that in the search for opportunity, vigilance is the first and most necessary defence.
