SAPS Bust Vehicle Theft Network in Tshwane Raid

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against motor vehicle theft, following a series of targeted operations that uncovered a suspected vehicle theft syndicate.
On Thursday, 19 March 2026, members of the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) carried out an intelligence-driven raid after receiving a tip-off from a community member about a property allegedly being used to dispose of stolen vehicles.

Tshwane District Commissioner, Samuel Thine, confirmed that the information was verified through surveillance before police moved in on the identified premises.

“Upon arrival, police discovered multiple motor vehicle engines with tampered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), as well as a trailer with an altered VIN. Several vehicle wiring harnesses were also recovered and linked to cases reported at various police stations in the Tshwane District,” said Thine.

The operation expanded to a second property linked to the suspect, where officers uncovered 18 stripped vehicle bodies.

These were positively identified as stolen vehicles reported across Tshwane and as far as Witbank.

At a third nearby location, police inspected two vehicles—one confirmed stolen, while a half-ton truck was found with a tampered VIN.

Major-General Thine praised the officers involved for their dedication, highlighting the importance of intelligence-led policing in dismantling organised vehicle theft syndicates.
