The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has issued an urgent call for South Africans to donate blood ahead of the Easter weekend, highlighting the critical need for a stable blood supply in hospitals across the country.
Recently, SANBS announced a nationwide campaign encouraging citizens to “Answer the Call” by donating blood, with an ambitious target of collecting 6,000 units in a single day.
The appeal comes at a time when many South Africans will be travelling or spending time with loved ones during the long weekend. Despite this, hospitals continue to operate at full capacity, treating trauma patients, performing surgeries, and supporting individuals undergoing cancer treatment or managing chronic illnesses – all of which depend on a consistent blood supply.
“Someone’s life depends on you answering,” SANBS emphasised, reinforcing the message that a single blood donation, which takes about 30 minutes, can help save multiple lives.
Behind every donation is a personal story. For Lezhanne Hartwell, blood donors played a crucial role in saving her young daughter’s life. Her 18-month-old daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma and required an urgent blood transfusion soon after.
Hartwell expressed deep gratitude to donors, saying their generosity contributed to saving her child’s life. Her daughter received a 200ml blood transfusion at Netcare Donald Gordon Hospital, an experience that profoundly changed Hartwell’s perspective on blood donation.
Despite her fear of needles, she has since committed to donating blood regularly after realising how vital it is for families facing medical emergencies.
SANBS continues to encourage all eligible South Africans to step forward and donate, reminding the public that even during holidays, the need for blood never takes a break.
