South African owners of specific Volkswagen Amarok models are being urged to contact their dealership immediately following a official safety recall issued by the National Consumer Commission (NCC). The recall affects 374 vehicles manufactured and made available between January and June of 2025.
The recall stems from a potential fault identified in the electromechanical brake servo control unit. According to the NCC, this defect could lead to a loss of braking assistance.
What this means for drivers: While the fundamental braking system remains operational, if the issue occurs, it would require significantly more physical effort to apply the brakes and would increase the vehicle’s stopping distance, raising the risk of an accident.
Volkswagen South Africa has stated that the inspection and any necessary repairs will be performed free of charge at any approved VW or Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealership.
Phetho Ntaba, spokesperson for the NCC, emphasized the importance of heeding such recalls. “Product recalls are vital to ensure the safety of products in the marketplace, and prompt action is essential,” Ntaba stated.
This VW announcement is part of a wider wave of recent vehicle recalls in South Africa. Just last week, Mercedes-Benz recalled 102 of its models, and days before that, faults with Takata airbags prompted recalls for the Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C.
Consumers who own an Amarok from the specified period are advised not to delay and to schedule an appointment with their local Volkswagen dealer to ensure their vehicle is safe.
