Operation Shanela Yields Results: Over 5,000 Arrests and 105 Illegal Firearms Removed from KZN Streets

The South African Police Service’s intensified crime-fighting initiative, Operation Shanela, has made a significant impact in KwaZulu-Natal, leading to the arrest of over 5,000 individuals in September. A central and critical achievement of the operation was the removal of 105 unlicensed firearms from circulation, directly addressing a major source of violent crime in the province.

According to police spokesperson Paul Magwaza, the arrests are a “culmination of relentless operations” aimed specifically at precincts with high crime volumes. Magwaza also highlighted ongoing investigative work, noting that authorities are now working to connect the arrested suspects to other crimes and are conducting ballistic tests on the seized weapons to uncover their potential involvement in past violent incidents.
