MEC Chiloane Shocked by Learner Death After School Wall Collapse

The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of a Grade 3 learner after a wall collapsed at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.

According to a media statement released on 27 March 2026, Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, said he was profoundly shocked and saddened by the incident, which occurred during breaktime on Thursday, 26 March 2026.

Preliminary reports indicate that a section of the school wall suddenly gave way, falling onto six learners. Emergency services responded quickly, transporting all the injured children to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

Tragically, one of the learners, a Grade 3 boy, later died in hospital from his injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the wall collapse.

In response to the incident, the Gauteng Department of Education has deployed psycho-social support teams to the school to provide counselling and emotional support to affected learners, educators, and the grieving family.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators, and the entire school community as they mourn this devastating loss. We will ensure that the necessary support is provided and that the circumstances surrounding this incident are determined,” said Chiloane.

The department has urged the public to follow its official communication platforms for further updates as investigations continue.
