Lydenburg Hospital Cleaner Denied Bail in Alleged Human Placenta Trafficking Case

A 39-year-old hospital cleaner accused of attempting to sell human placentas will remain in custody after she failed to pay the R10,000 bail set by the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Nomvula Rose Mnisi was arrested on September 17 after police allegedly caught her trying to sell human tissue. The Mpumalanga Department of Health has confirmed that Mnisi, who worked as a cleaner at the hospital, has been suspended pending the outcome of the case. However, officials stated that the formal suspension letter has not yet been served to her while she is in detention.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious questions about biohazard security at public health facilities. The arrest was first reported by the Lydenburg SAPS, which detailed the discovery of the placentas in a plastic bag.

Mnisi’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 3, where the state is expected to outline the full details of the charges against her. The allegations involve the illegal trade of human tissue, a serious offense under South African law.
