Level 10 Red Warning Issued as Strong Storms Target Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga

South Africa is bracing for a dangerous day of weather as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 10 red alert, the highest warning level for severe thunderstorms expected from midday on Monday, 8 December 2025.

According to an earlier government weather update, scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected across much of the eastern and northern parts of the country, with strong storms likely in Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga. Central and western regions are forecast to remain mostly dry.

SAWS warns that the incoming weather system poses extremely dangerous conditions, with forecasters cautioning that the storms may bring major infrastructure damage, sudden flash flooding, fallen trees, and widespread power outages.

Residents in the affected provinces have been urged to take immediate precautions.

Authorities are also appealing to motorists to drive with extreme caution. Roads are expected to become slippery and visibility may be severely reduced during heavy downpours.

“Please drive safely, stay weather-aware, and carry an umbrella if you’re heading out,” the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) advised in its morning message to the public.
