KZN Education Department Faces R3.4bn Shortfall, Treasury Intervenes

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department is in a dire financial crisis, requiring R3.4 billion urgently. The provincial treasury has taken control of its finances due to alleged gross mismanagement.

The crisis has led to the closure of preschools and non-payment of teachers and suppliers. Solutions announced after an urgent meeting with national minister Siviwe Gwarube include a renewed audit to purge “ghost employees” from the system. Premier Thami Ntuli has established a special working group to manage the emergency.
