Khumalo raises concern over alleged misuse of state resources in failed Khawula arrest

Concerns have been raised about the possible misuse of state resources following a failed attempt to arrest entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.

The issue emerged during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission, where Commissioner Sandile Khumalo questioned the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest.

The commission heard that six police officers were deployed to an event in Kroonstad where Khawula was believed to be performing. The planned arrest was reportedly linked to information the blogger had posted on the social media platform X about Fikile Mbalula and businessman Ze Nxumalo.

During testimony, it was revealed that Nxumalo had purchased tickets for the police officers to attend the event where Khawula was expected to appear. However, Khawula did not attend the event, and the arrest did not take place.

A member of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, Fannie Nkosi, disputed Khumalo’s suggestion that the operation amounted to an abuse of state resources.

Nkosi told the commission that he did not believe the deployment of officers was improper, arguing that Khawula is a public figure and that arrest operations sometimes require additional planning to manage potential reactions from the public.

He added that officers in Kroonstad could also have assisted if Khawula had been present at the event.
