What began as a single smoothie bar in a Cape Town suburb in 1996 has evolved into a global healthy fast food phenomenon. Kauai, the South African-born brand that championed nutritious eating long before it became a trend, has now surpassed 250 stores worldwide, with a presence in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and Thailand.
The milestone marks a significant achievement for the brand, which has remained true to its founding philosophy: that fast food does not have to be unhealthy. Kauai’s menu, which features fresh smoothies, protein-rich bowls, salads, wraps, and breakfast options, is designed to cater to a wide range of dietary preferences, including vegan, vegetarian, and high-protein diets. The brand also offers a suite of digital tools, including a mobile app and online ordering platform, that allow customers to customise their meals to their exact nutritional needs.
Kauai now serves over 25 million meals annually, a testament to the growing global appetite for convenient, wholesome food. The brand’s international expansion has been carefully managed, with a focus on adapting to local tastes while maintaining the core values of freshness, sustainability, and nutritional transparency.
Founder and CEO Piers van Zyl, who started the business as a small smoothie stand, attributes the brand’s success to its consistency and commitment to quality. “We wanted to make healthy eating accessible and enjoyable. That mission hasn’t changed, even as we’ve grown beyond South Africa’s borders,” he said.
As Kauai continues to explore new markets, the brand is also investing in sustainability initiatives, including reducing single-use plastics and sourcing ingredients ethically. With a strong foundation and a loyal customer base, the next chapter in Kauai’s story promises to be as vibrant as its signature smoothie bowls.
