Good news awaits motorists as fuel prices will drop on Wednesday. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed reductions across several fuel types, largely due to a stronger rand.
Petrol prices for both grades will decrease by 65 cents per litre. Diesel will fall by between 50 and 57 cents per litre, while illuminating paraffin will drop by 70 cents per litre at the retail level. In contrast, the price of LP gas will rise by 31 cents nationwide and by 36 cents in the Western Cape.
Department spokesperson Robert Maake said the new prices will take effect on Wednesday, 4 February 2026. He explained that the rand’s appreciation against the US dollar helped lower fuel costs by between 28 and 32 cents per litre. International fuel prices also declined because of sufficient inventory, even though average crude oil prices increased during the same period.
Maake added that the increase in LP gas prices is linked to higher demand in the Northern Hemisphere, where extreme winter conditions are being experienced. The slate levy remains unchanged at 0 cents per litre for both petrol and diesel.
