The family of the late South African Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa has departed for France to accompany his remains home, beginning a profound journey guided by cultural and spiritual traditions.
Ambassador Mthethwa tragically passed away last week after reportedly falling from the 22nd floor of a Paris hotel. His repatriation will be guided by specific rituals performed by his family to bring his spirit back to South Africa. Khulekani Mthethwa, the family spokesperson, stated that elders from KwaMbonambi on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal have traveled to Pretoria to oversee the ceremonial proceedings.
“These rituals are not just tradition—they are essential to honour Ambassador Mthethwa’s life and ensure his spirit returns home with the respect and dignity he deserves,” Khulekani Mthethwa explained.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the funeral arrangements. These are being coordinated with the family to respectfully balance official state protocols with essential cultural customs.
