The eThekwini Municipality has initiated a formal internal investigation and condemned in the strongest terms the actions of a city official who was captured on video sweeping a pile of litter and debris directly into a roadside stormwater drain, in a blatant violation of municipal protocols and environmental safeguards.
The cellphone footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms this week, shows a uniformed municipal worker, whose identity is known to the City, using a broom to gather waste from a pavement in the Morningside area and deliberately pushing it through the grate of a stormwater drain. In a detailed statement, Municipal Spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed the City is treating the incident with the utmost seriousness.
“The eThekwini Municipality has viewed the circulating video and can confirm that it depicts one of our employees engaging in conduct that is completely unacceptable, harmful, and contrary to all City bylaws, waste management policies, and environmental protection measures,” Sisilana stated.
