Crime Intel Pays Off: R20 Million Cocaine Haul Bound for Cape Town Seized in Midrand Raid

In a significant victory against the narcotics trade, a multi-disciplinary police team has seized 80 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of R20 million at a smallholding in Midrand. The massive drug bust, a result of precise crime intelligence, thwarted a major shipment destined for the streets of Cape Town.

The operation, which unfolded on Tuesday evening, saw members from the Gauteng organised crime unit, the K9 unit, and forensic experts converge on a plot in Blue Hills. Following a tip-off, they discovered the huge consignment of drugs, believed to have been smuggled into South Africa from a neighbouring country, hidden in a storage room.

A 56-year-old man, alleged to be the property owner, was arrested on the scene and is facing charges of possession and dealing in drugs. SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe hailed the operation, stating it “demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between police units in tackling organised crime.”

The seizure represents a major financial and logistical blow to a sophisticated drug trafficking network operating between provinces.
