CHAOTIC SCHOOL INCIDENT LEADS TO TRAGIC DEATH OF GRADE 12 LEARNER IN HARTBEESPOORT

A Grade 12 learner from Schaumburg Combined School in Hartbeespoort has died after being struck by a school bus during a violent incident at the school on 20 November 2025. According to the Gauteng Department of Education, four boys allegedly entered the school illegally and started a fight with matric learners, causing widespread chaos.

As teachers tried to restore order and direct learners to buses, the situation escalated at the loading area. A bus driver, fearing for his safety, attempted to drive off and accidentally hit a Grade 12 learner and a Grade 10 learner. Several learners were hospitalised, and the matric girl later died from her injuries on 23 November.

Police are investigating the incident, and psychosocial support teams will be sent to the school. Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed condolences and condemned those who instigated the violence.

“This is saddening, that such a chaotic outburst led to the unfortunate passing of a learner who had completed her exams. We condemn the unscrupulous individuals who instigated this unfortunate event,” said Chiloane.
