Bill Gates finds himself at the centre of a growing firestorm this week, as environmental and faith groups across Africa demand accountability and reparations for his foundation’s agricultural projects. The controversy ignited after Gates stated that while climate change is a serious issue, it would “not be the end of civilisation.” For many on the front lines, this comment underscored a disconnect with their lived reality.
A powerful coalition of nearly 600 African faith leaders is challenging the very core of the billionaire’s philanthropic efforts on the continent. They argue that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through its primary vehicle, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), has caused widespread environmental degradation and undermined the sovereignty of local communities.
The movement, known as The Gates Letter Campaign, is a continent-wide effort to stop the financing of industrial agriculture in Africa. Campaigners assert that these methods, heavily promoted by AGRA since its founding in 2006 with Gates Foundation backing, have pushed African farmers toward expensive, patented seeds and chemical fertilizers. This model, they say, has failed to deliver on its promises of prosperity, instead trapping smallholder farmers in debt, reducing biodiversity, and damaging the natural ecosystems they depend on for survival.
Coordinating this renewed push is the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI). The group officially launched a fresh open letter to the Microsoft founder on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in their long-standing fight against what they term “agro-philanthropy”—a form of philanthropy that prioritizes corporate-driven industrial farming over community-focused, sustainable agriculture. The letter serves as a direct challenge to Gates, urging a fundamental shift in strategy and calling for reparations to address the harm communities allege has been caused.
