Banking Revolution: Capitec to Bring Smart ID Services to Hundreds of Branches

In a move set to dramatically expand access to essential government services, Capitec has confirmed its plans to roll out smart ID application services at its branches, starting with a limited pilot later this year.

As South Africa’s largest bank by customer base, Capitec’s extensive branch network, particularly in remote communities, positions it as a key player in a groundbreaking digital partnership with the Department of Home Affairs. This initiative aims to bring smart ID and passport services directly to hundreds of bank locations, moving beyond the limited 30-branch pilot of the past.

The rollout, though slightly delayed as a new integrated system undergoes testing, represents the biggest technological leap for Home Affairs in decades. Instead of placing Home Affairs officials inside banks, a new API will allow bank systems to securely connect to the Home Affairs backend for biometric enrolment and application processing.

Capitec plans a cautious initial rollout to “extend access in areas with a limited Home Affairs footprint,” with ambitions to scale up to 250-300 branches by the end of 2026. The long-term vision, involving nine banks, is to create over 834 service points, effectively making smart ID applications available at well over 1,000 locations nationwide.

This partnership promises to reduce the estimated 16 million green ID books in circulation, cut down on red tape, and free up overwhelmed Home Affairs offices to focus on other critical services.
