Australian Pilot Dies in Brazil Crash Carrying Nearly R1 Billion in Cocaine

Brazilian authorities are investigating a plane crash in Coruripe, Alagoas, that left Australian pilot Timothy James Clark dead and uncovered a massive cocaine haul worth close to R1 billion.

The wreckage, found in a sugarcane field, contained between 180kg and 195kg of cocaine, neatly packed into 187 bricks disguised with SpaceX branding. The discovery has raised suspicions of a sophisticated international drug trafficking operation.

The Crash

Clark, a 46-year-old former Qantas pilot with more than 20 years of aviation experience, was flying a Sling Aircraft D8 Sling 4 TSI when it went down shortly after take-off from a rural airstrip. He was the sole occupant of the aircraft, which investigators say may have suffered an engine failure, though the cause is still under review.

The aircraft itself had a South African connection — Clark bought it from Sling Aircraft in Johannesburg in November 2022, and it had been operating in Brazil for the past two years.

The Cocaine Haul

Authorities recovered the cocaine packages, which were estimated to have a street value of nearly R1 billion. The branding of the bricks with the logo of Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, is believed to have been a form of counter-surveillance disguise used by traffickers.

Investigations Underway

The case now raises critical questions: Was Clark knowingly involved in drug trafficking, or was he deceived into transporting the narcotics?

Brazilian investigators, working with international partners, are examining possible ties to a broader criminal network.

Clark had previously lived in South Africa before relocating, according to The Daily Mail.
