The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) arrested 40 people and impounded 33 public transport vehicles during an intensive weekend road safety operation conducted across Tshwane between Friday, 17 July and Sunday, 19 July 2026.
The multi-unit operation, led by the Public Transport Unit, Pedestrian Unit and regional policing members, focused on high-impact routes and areas including Marabastad, Ga-Rankuwa, Mamelodi, Pretoria North and Fountains Valley.
According to the TMPD, 17 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 23 pedestrians were arrested on the N1 and N4 for being a source of danger to themselves and other road users.
The department also impounded 33 public transport vehicles, including taxis and e-hailing vehicles, for operating in contravention of the National Land Transport Act, 2009 (Act 5 of 2009), which regulates the operating standards of public transport.
“The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted a series of intensive road safety operations over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of 40 individuals and the impoundment of over 33 public transport vehicles throughout Tshwane from Friday, to Sunday, 19 July 2026,” the department said.
TMPD said the enforcement campaign forms part of its ongoing commitment to improve road safety and clamp down on dangerous driving and unlawful public transport operations.
“These operations are an ongoing departmental resolution to eliminate dangerous driving behaviour. The TMPD will not deter in taking firm measures against those who compromise road safety in Tshwane,” the department added.
