The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has dismissed reports claiming that advocate Malesela Teffo has been reinstated to the legal profession, saying the information circulating on social media and in some media reports is false.
In a statement issued on Monday, the LPC said Teffo remains struck from the roll of legal practitioners and has not been readmitted to practice.
“The LPC wishes to categorically state that these reports are incorrect,” the Council said.
The Council further clarified that Teffo is “not entitled to practise as a legal practitioner in South Africa” as he has not been readmitted to the profession.
According to the LPC, any application for readmission must undergo a formal legal process in terms of the Legal Practice Act. This includes a thorough assessment by the Council to determine whether the applicant is a fit and proper person to return to practice before the matter can be considered by the courts.
“The LPC confirms that no such matter, relating to Mr Malesela Teffo’s possible readmission, has been considered or approved by the Council, and accordingly, no decision has been taken supporting Mr Teffo’s readmission to the legal profession,” the statement reads.
The Council also urged members of the public and the media to verify information through its official communication channels before publishing or relying on reports regarding the status of legal practitioners.
It added that it remains committed to protecting the public and maintaining the integrity, independence and credibility of South Africa’s legal profession.
