Yellow Level 2 Alert as Storms Threaten Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to affect parts of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga from Friday night through Saturday.

According to the weather service, the warning will be valid from 22:00 on Friday, 6 March 2026, until 23:59 on Saturday, 7 March 2026.

Forecasters say scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers are expected across the three provinces, with the possibility that some storms could intensify and become severe, particularly over Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the northern parts of Gauteng.

SAWS warned that these severe storms could bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible hail, which may lead to several disruptions.

Potential impacts include damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, vehicles, livestock and other property. Authorities also warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges, which could result in traffic disruptions and vehicle accidents.

In addition, essential services such as education, healthcare, communication and electricity supply could be affected due to power surges or service interruptions.

Residents in the affected provinces are urged to exercise caution, avoid flooded roads and stay updated with weather alerts issued by the South African Weather Service.
