A 24-year-old man from Umlazi, south of Durban, has been arrested following allegations that he violently assaulted his 31-year-old girlfriend, an incident that gained widespread attention on social media.
The arrest comes after the woman publicly accused police of failing to act promptly after she opened a case against her partner. Her social media posts triggered public outrage, placing pressure on law enforcement to respond.
According to police, the woman is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brigadier Robert Netshiunda said the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect asked the woman to come to his residence to collect her personal belongings. Upon her arrival, the man is accused of attacking her with a pipe, biting her, and repeatedly assaulting her with his hands.
Police further allege that the victim managed to flee to her vehicle, but the suspect followed her and damaged the rear windscreen before she could leave the scene.
Netshiunda noted that the couple has a history of laying charges against one another, with previous cases already heard in court. He clarified that those matters were not necessarily classified as domestic violence cases.
Police have reiterated their call for individuals in romantic or domestic relationships to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes, including engaging trusted family members, friends, or professional support services, rather than resorting to violence.
