A routine morning commute turned into a scene of tragedy and heroic rescue on the N12 highway in Alberton during the early hours of Monday, November 17, 2025. Two people were killed and three others injured in a devastating collision between a sedan and an SUV, an incident emergency officials have directly linked to the treacherous driving conditions created by persistent heavy rainfall.
The crash occurred around 04:05 on the N12 eastbound Comaro on-ramp, a critical junction often busy with early-morning traffic. According to initial reports from the City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, the vehicles collided under circumstances that are now the subject of a formal investigation. The force of the impact was severe, leaving both vehicles with catastrophic damage.
A Desperate Rescue Operation in the Pouring Rain
Emergency personnel, including paramedics and firefighters, faced a challenging and somber scene upon arrival. The driver of the sedan, tragically, showed no signs of life and was declared dead at the scene.
The focus of the response then shifted to the other occupants. One passenger in the SUV was found to be critically injured and trapped in the mangled wreckage. In a delicate and urgent operation, rescue crews had to deploy the “Jaws of Life” hydraulic cutting equipment to painstakingly free the individual from the vehicle. Despite the swift and professional efforts of the medics, this passenger succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead after being extricated.
“The conditions were extremely difficult, with the ongoing rain and the complexity of the wreckage,” said a spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services. “Our teams worked tirelessly to free the trapped individuals and provide immediate medical care.”
Three other survivors were treated on-site for injuries ranging from serious to moderate. They were subsequently transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals for further medical attention. The identities of the deceased and the injured have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
Major Traffic Disruption and Official Warnings
The aftermath of the collision caused significant disruption during the morning rush hour. Multiple lanes on the N12 eastbound were closed for several hours to allow for the rescue operation, crash investigation, and vehicle recovery. This led to extensive traffic backlogs, with motorists being advised to seek alternative routes.
As authorities work to determine the exact cause of the accident, officials have reiterated urgent safety warnings to the public. The South African Weather Service had issued alerts for disruptive rain across parts of Gauteng, and this incident underscores the lethal potential of such conditions.
“We cannot stress this enough: when it rains, please slow down, increase your following distance, and ensure your headlights are on,” the emergency services spokesperson urged. “A vehicle is much harder to control on a wet surface, and visibility is drastically reduced. A momentary lapse in concentration can have the most devastating consequences.”
The N12 crash serves as a grim reminder of the heightened risks on the road during the summer storm season, turning a vital transport artery into a site of profound loss.
