The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has sounded the alarm, issuing a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to batter the area today, January 28, 2026, between 14:00 and 23:59.
According to forecasts from the South African Weather Service, the city is in for a soaking, with widespread rainfall and thunderstorms predicted. This spells trouble for residents, with a heightened risk of flooding and associated hazards looming large.
“The Emergency Services Department will remain on high alert while continuously monitoring known flooding hotspots throughout this period,” the statement read.
Residents are being warned to beware of potential impacts, including localized flooding in low-lying areas and flood-prone roads, small hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning that could spark structural damage or fires. Traffic disruptions and vehicle accidents due to flooded major roads are also likely.
In light of the severe weather warning, citizens are advised to take necessary precautions. “Stay indoors where possible and avoid contact with metal objects such as barbed-wire fences and power lines that may attract lightning,” the city cautioned.
Additional safety tips include steering clear of isolated trees or tall objects during thunderstorms and avoiding flooded low-lying roads, bridges, or swollen streams at all costs.
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department is urging residents to stay tuned to short-term weather forecasts and heed all alerts and warnings issued by the South African Weather Service.
