SEBIDENG WEST – The Gauteng education community is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of a Grade 12 learner from Lakeside Secondary School. The learner, whose name has been withheld, passed away on Monday evening, 3 November 2025, under distressing circumstances.
According to officials, the learner fell ill at home, beginning to vomit while in bed. As her condition rapidly deteriorated, she was rushed to a nearby medical facility. Tragically, she was declared dead upon arrival. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed its profound sadness. In a statement, GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona conveyed the department’s heartfelt condolences. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time,” Mabona said, addressing the learner’s family, friends, educators, and the entire school community.
In response to the tragedy, the department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit has immediately dispatched its Institutional Support and Support (ISS) team to Lakeside Secondary. The team is on-site to provide critical counselling and emotional support to learners and staff grappling with the loss.
“This tragedy comes at a critical time for our matriculants,” the GDE stated, highlighting the particular pressure of the ongoing National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. The department has reassured the public that the 2025 exams are continuing smoothly across the province, but urged anyone in need to seek help.
A local child psychologist, Dr Anika Pillay, emphasised the importance of community support. “A sudden loss like this creates a ripple of grief and anxiety, especially amongst peers. It is crucial that learners feel safe to express their emotions and know that professional support is available without stigma,” Dr. Pillay told Makopo News.
The incident has cast a sombre shadow over the school as the community comes to terms with the loss of a young life on the cusp of adulthood.
