The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has intensified its road safety and law enforcement operations, resulting in the impoundment of 58 public transport vehicles operating illegally across the City of Tshwane.
The week long operation targeted minibus taxis, e hailing vehicles and heavy motor vehicles as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance with transport legislation.
According to the TMPD, officers impounded 58 minibus taxis and e hailing vehicles between Monday and Friday after they were found to be operating without the required documentation or were deemed unroadworthy. The vehicles were impounded in terms of the National Land Transport Act.
In a separate enforcement operation conducted in Centurion and Akasia, officers inspected 146 heavy motor vehicles. Of those inspected, 46 were found to be non compliant with transport regulations.
The operation also led to 14 trucks being declared unroadworthy. The affected vehicles were issued with prohibition notices, preventing them from operating until they comply with the required road safety standards.
The TMPD says these ongoing operations form part of its commitment to improving road safety, enforcing transport laws and ensuring that public transport vehicles operating on Tshwane roads meet the necessary legal and safety requirements.
