The KuGompo City Regional Court has ruled that the 21 young people who died in the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy four years ago died from people crush asphyxiation.
The ruling was delivered during the inquest into the deaths. The court found that the tragedy resulted from the negligence of several individuals, including Sergeant Thabile Kondile, tavern owner Vuyokazi Ndevu, manager Siyakhangela Ndevu, bouncer Thembisa Diko and Zuko Lizani from the Eastern Cape Liquor Board.
The court has recommended that all five individuals be prosecuted in connection with the deaths.
The Enyobeni Tavern tragedy, which claimed the lives of 21 young people, shocked South Africa and sparked widespread calls for greater accountability and stricter enforcement of liquor licensing and public safety regulations.
