In a significant breakthrough, Western Cape authorities have arrested three additional suspects linked to the hijacking and brutal murder of an off-duty Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officer in Browns Farm over the weekend, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to four.
The 26-year-old officer, whose identity has been withheld, was attacked while off duty. In a particularly vicious assault, he was hijacked, stabbed, and stoned. His lifeless body was discovered by distraught colleagues in the Marikana Informal Settlement before he was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The killing sent shockwaves through the community and law enforcement ranks, prompting an immediate and intensive multi-unit investigation. According to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, the first arrest acted as a catalyst for a coordinated manhunt.
“Following the first arrest, the Safety and Security Information Systems Management unit, along with the SAPS Organised Crime Unit, LEAP, and the Khayelitsha Tactical Response Unit, embarked on a manhunt for the remaining suspects,” Smith stated.
The investigation gained critical momentum when the team received a tip-off, leading them to the COVID Informal Settlement where two suspects were apprehended. Demonstrating relentless determination, the team continued their efforts and arrested a third suspect in Philippi East. In a crucial development, a knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered during this arrest.
The swift and coordinated action represents a major step forward in a case that has highlighted the extreme dangers faced by law enforcement personnel, even when they are not on active duty. The four suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where they will face charges related to the officer’s murder.
