Taxi, Car Collide Head-On in KZN, 17 People Injured in a Crash Near Pietermaritzburg

A quiet afternoon on a rural KwaZulu-Natal route turned into a scene of devastation and emergency response on Tuesday following a violent head-on collision that left seventeen people, including a number of schoolchildren, with injuries ranging from moderate to critical.

The crash occurred on the M70 in the Embundweni area, approximately 20 kilometres outside of Pietermaritzburg. According to preliminary reports from KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a minibus taxi, believed to be transporting pupils and other commuters, and a light motor vehicle collided directly. The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles with catastrophic front-end damage and passengers trapped in the wreckage.

“The scene was one of utter chaos when our teams arrived,” said Robert McKenzie, spokesperson for KZN EMS. “We had to use hydraulic rescue equipment, commonly known as the ‘jaws of life,’ to extricate several patients who were pinned in the vehicles. It was a complex and delicate operation.”

Emergency services, including multiple ambulance units, fire and rescue teams, and local law enforcement, descended on the route, which was closed for several hours as first responders worked to stabilise and transport the injured. A total of seventeen patients were assessed and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

“The nature of the injuries is varied, with some patients sustaining serious, life-threatening trauma,” McKenzie confirmed. “Among the injured are a number of school-aged children, which makes this incident particularly distressing for the community.”

While the exact cause of the collision is still under formal investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), initial on-scene assessments suggest that dangerous overtaking or a possible lapse in driver concentration on the winding rural road may have been contributing factors. The condition of the road surface and the high volume of taxi traffic on such routes have long been concerns raised by local community safety forums.

“The sheer number of people injured in a single incident highlights the devastating potential of crashes involving public transport,” said Thandiwe Ndlovu, a local ward councillor. “Our hearts go out to the families. This is a tragic reminder that we must continuously advocate for road safety, responsible driving, and better enforcement on these roads.”

Community members assisted at the scene before professionals arrived, helping to comfort the injured. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Embundweni area, with many expressing concern over what they describe as increasingly reckless driving on the M70.

As the injured fight for recovery in hospital, the SAPS have opened a case of culpable homicide for further investigation. Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage of the events leading up to it to come forward to assist with the investigation.
