Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria is currently facing temporary delays in surgical services after its heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems broke down.

The Gauteng Department of Health says the malfunction has affected theatre operations. However, contingency plans have been introduced, including the use of external theatres and contractors on site, to ensure that patient care continues.

Health Department spokesperson Kealeboga Mohajane explained that this has been a recurring issue because the equipment has been in use since 2006.

Mohajane added that a significant section of the theatre complex has only recently been affected, which has led to further slowdowns. He said work with contractors is continuing and improvements are expected soon. The department has urged the public to remain patient, assuring them that emergency procedures are still being attended to and that elective surgeries will gradually resume as normal operations are restored.
