“Sold Down the River”: Dozens of South Africans Trapped in Myanmar Cyber-Scam Compounds After Fake Job Offers

Dozens of South African citizens are stranded in Myanmar, trapped in a nightmare of human trafficking after being lured by sophisticated online scams promising lucrative careers abroad. The victims, recruited through social media with offers in hospitality, marketing, and teaching, are now being held in cyberfraud compounds run by a Chinese organised crime group.

Instead of the promised jobs with salaries around R15,000 a month, they were forced to work in online scam operations. Their plight came to light after a group of victims staged a dramatic escape from one compound. According to Byron Mann of the counter-trafficking NGO Brave to Love, the group gathered in prayer outside the facility, an act that inspired a crowd of over 1,000 people to overwhelm armed guards and force the gates open.

Despite this brave breakout, many of the escapees remain stranded in Myanmar, requiring urgent assistance to return home safely. Mann confirmed that authorities and NGOs are now working to locate other South Africans still trapped in similar compounds.

A Warning to Job Seekers

Mann issued a stark warning, linking the crisis directly to South Africa’s high unemployment rates. “The unemployment rates amongst the young people are creating a climate where people are more susceptible to being sold down the river with these job offers,” he said.

He emphasised the sophisticated nature of the syndicates, which meticulously research their targets. “They actually research to try and find out what would be the best angle to come up with to try and lure and trick these young people into coming abroad, where they are going to get trafficked.”

The NGO urges families to use official channels to vet any overseas job offers and to contact human trafficking hotlines before loved ones travel abroad. Mann highlighted that these criminal groups manipulate and control all communication to isolate victims and keep their families in the dark about their true, harrowing circumstances.
