Shock and sadness have gripped the Soshanguve community after the sudden death of Khutso Madiga, a young professional from Limpopo who had just begun a new chapter in Cape Town 2 weeks ago

Madiga, originally from Lebowakgomo, had recently relocated to the Western Cape after securing a new job opportunity. A qualified chartered accountant and data scientist, he had officially started work earlier this month and was staying at an Airbnb in Parklands while searching for permanent accommodation.

On Sunday, 15 February, he was found dead in the apartment.

According to a close friend, Lethabo Maswi, Madiga had met 2 women earlier that day and later returned with them to the Airbnb. During the evening, he reportedly made a video call to a friend and showed him the women. The call was screen recorded without their knowledge.

Maswi alleges that the women later drugged Madiga and stole his belongings, including his cellphone and laptops, before leaving the apartment.

Western Cape police confirmed that Table View police have opened a case for investigation following the discovery of the body on 15 February. A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.

As short term rentals continue to grow across South Africa, including in and around Soshanguve where many residents use Airbnb accommodation for travel, business trips, and private stays, this incident raises important questions about personal safety and awareness when using such spaces.

Friends describe Madiga as ambitious, disciplined, and deeply committed to improving his life and supporting his family. Raised by a single mother, he worked hard to qualify as a chartered accountant and went on to further his studies in data science.

He was remembered as lively and full of energy, someone who loved dancing and enjoyed driving his Mercedes. Those close to him say he lived up to his name Khutso, which means peace, through his kindness and generosity.

As the Soshanguve community reflects on the loss of another young professional working to build a future far from home, family and friends are calling for justice and answers.
