Rising river levels disrupt access to camps in Kruger National Park

Rising river levels are affecting several camps in the northern parts of Kruger National Park following days of heavy rainfall in Limpopo.

South African National Parks said water levels in the Shingwedzi and Luvuvhu river systems have risen sharply, with further fluctuations expected as more rain is forecast this week.

The park said the area remains vulnerable after earlier heavy rains in 2026 left river catchments saturated, increasing the risk of flooding.

While water levels in the Shingwedzi River continue to rise, park management said the situation has not yet reached a point where evacuations of staff or visitors are required.

Officials are also closely monitoring the Shisha Stream near Babalala and Sirheni after it overflowed onto a tar road.

Access to several facilities in the northern section of the park has been affected, including the Punda Maria and Pafuri gates, as well as a number of bush camps.

SANParks said most gravel roads in the northern and central parts of the park have been temporarily closed, urging visitors to remain cautious and follow road signage while conditions are being monitored.
