Residents in Groenkloof, Pretoria, have voiced concerns about a proposed mixed-use development that could replace the Vriendekring sports club grounds on Totius Street with a large residential and commercial complex.
The Groenkloof Residents’ Association (GRA) says the community is not opposed to development but is worried about the scale of the proposal, which could include a shopping centre, office space and up to 1 800 residential units.
GRA deputy chairperson Carla Ferreira said residents fear the project could place additional strain on already ageing infrastructure, including roads, sewage systems, water supply and electricity. Concerns have also been raised about plans for multi-storey buildings, including one reportedly reaching 12 storeys, and whether the site can accommodate the necessary parking and traffic.
Residents also argue that the Vriendekring sports club is an active community facility and forms part of a green belt linking Groenkloof with nearby suburbs such as Lukasrand, New Muckleneuk and Brooklyn.
Ferreira said residents previously submitted objections and concerns to the City of Tshwane but claim they received little feedback from the metro.
City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the sports club’s lease with the municipality remains valid until 2056. He explained that the city is considering subdividing the land, with about 24 hectares potentially released for development while the club retains a smaller portion of the property.
Mashigo said the proposal still requires a council resolution and will undergo a tender process. The successful developer would also need to prepare development plans and apply for rezoning, as the land is currently zoned for agricultural use.
