Ramaphosa to Deliver Keynote Address at National Reconciliation Day Commemoration

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, deliver the keynote address at South Africa’s national commemoration of Reconciliation Day, to be held at the Ncome Museum in Nquthu Local Municipality, within the uMzinyathi District of KwaZulu-Natal.

The 2025 national event will be led jointly by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government under the theme “Reaffirming Reconciliation for Future Generations.” The theme calls on South Africans to deepen their commitment to unity, healing, forgiveness and nation-building in pursuit of a shared and inclusive future.

This year’s commemoration carries strong historical significance, with the Ncome Museum located at the Battle of Blood River heritage site. The battle, fought in 1838 between Voortrekker forces and the Zulu army, marked a pivotal and deeply divisive chapter in the country’s history. For more than a century, the day was commemorated in ways that reflected South Africa’s fractured past.

Following the advent of democracy, the government redefined 16 December in 1995 as the National Day of Reconciliation, transforming it from a symbol of division into a platform for unity, dialogue, truth, justice and healing. The decision to host the 2025 national programme at Ncome underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to confront historical injustices while promoting peace and mutual understanding.

By returning to this historically significant site, the commemoration aims to encourage South Africans to engage honestly with the complexities of the past, while reaffirming a collective commitment to reconciliation, inclusion and nation-building.
