Police have confiscated more than 10 000 counterfeit items during a crackdown in Marabastad, Pretoria, with the goods estimated to be worth over R9 million.
The seizure included branded sportswear, footwear, cosmetics and cellphone accessories. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda Van Wyk said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods.
The latest operation comes a week after police seized counterfeit merchandise and manufacturing equipment valued at more than R1.5 million at a storage facility in the Johannesburg CBD.
Police say counterfeit goods can violate the intellectual property rights of legitimate businesses and may also expose consumers to health and safety risks.
