Police Open Homicide Case After Minibus-Taxi Crash Kills Six in Ngqeleni

A scene of devastation on a rural Eastern Cape road has claimed six lives and left multiple others critically injured, following a catastrophic head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a light motor vehicle. The tragedy, which occurred on Sunday afternoon along the R61 road near Ngqeleni, has plunged surrounding communities into mourning and prompted police to open a culpable homicide docket.

According to preliminary reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the minibus taxi, reportedly carrying several passengers, and a sedan collided with immense force. The impact was so severe that emergency personnel worked for hours to extricate the deceased and injured from the mangled wreckage of both vehicles.

“On arrival, we found a scene of absolute carnage. It is one of the most severe accidents we have responded to in this area recently,” said an official from the local Emergency Medical Services, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The deceased, whose identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, are believed to be from the taxi. The driver of the sedan and passengers from both vehicles were among those rushed to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to serious.

SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, confirmed that a culpable homicide investigation is now underway. “A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation following this fatal crash that claimed six lives. Forensic accident reconstruction specialists are on scene to determine the exact cause, which may include factors such as speed, road conditions, and driver error. Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased.”

The R61, a critical but often perilous arterial route connecting several towns in the OR Tambo District, has been the site of numerous fatal accidents. Community leaders and road safety advocates have long raised concerns about dangerous driving, poor road conditions in sections, and a lack of adequate safety barriers on certain stretches.

Local Councillor Nomvula Komani, expressed the community’s profound grief and frustration. “We are burying our people every month on this road. Today, six families are shattered. We need more than just investigations; we need permanent solutions—visible policing, road repairs, and serious consequences for reckless drivers. This is not just an accident; it is a failure of our systems.”

The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over the festive period, serving as a grim reminder of the human cost of South Africa’s road safety crisis. As police continue their investigation, the community of Ngqeleni and beyond is left to grapple with the immense loss, while calls for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed on the province’s roads grow ever louder.
