Former Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane has praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for publicly raising allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference within the justice system.
Phahlane was addressing Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee during hearings held in Cape Town, where he reflected on Mkhwanazi’s decision to take his concerns into the public domain.
According to Phahlane, Mkhwanazi’s recent revelations were not new and had been raised previously through official channels, including engagements with Parliament.
“Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi went public on issues of national importance, but this was not the first time he raised these concerns,” Phahlane said. “I know he appeared before Parliament once or twice on related matters.”
Phahlane noted that little action was taken following those earlier warnings, arguing that meaningful intervention only began after Mkhwanazi publicly aired the allegations in July 2025.
“Nothing happened to those issues until he went public on the 6th of July 2025. Now we have an Ad Hoc Committee and the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry,” he said, questioning whether these processes could not have been initiated earlier, particularly after the March parliamentary sessions.
The Ad Hoc Committee is currently examining allegations of systemic failures and undue influence within the criminal justice system, with Mkhwanazi’s claims forming a central part of its mandate
