Operation Shanela Unleashes a Blitz on Crime in Tshwane, Netting 310 Suspects in Coordinated Sweep

In a powerful demonstration of integrated law enforcement, a high-impact Operation Shanela deployment descended upon the Wonderboompoort and Pretoria North areas this past Saturday, culminating in the arrest of 310 suspects and a significant seizure of illicit goods in a meticulously planned, 48-hour blitz.

The operation, a continuation of the national crime-combatting initiative, was spearheaded by the Tshwane District Commissioner, Major General Samuel Thine, and represented a formidable alliance of SAPS units and partner organisations. The coordinated effort wove together the sharp investigative work of detectives with the imposing presence of visible policing, creating an inescapable net for offenders.

“The success of this operation lies in its coordination,” stated Major General Thine. “We moved beyond isolated efforts, creating a unified front that left no room for criminal elements to hide.”

The operation commenced in the shadows of Friday evening, as teams of detectives fanned out across the district, acting on intelligence and executing warrants in a pre-dawn strike. This initial phase proved highly successful, resulting in the arrest of 254 suspects wanted in connection with a range of serious crimes. Among those apprehended were:

  • 5 suspects linked to theft.
  • 21 individuals wanted for malicious damage to property.
  • 6 alleged perpetrators of armed robbery.
  • 5 suspects facing serious rape charges.

In a significant push to address the scourge of gender-based violence, an additional 75 individuals facing related charges were also tracked down and taken into custody, sending a clear message that such offences remain a top priority for the SAPS.

As Saturday dawned, the operation shifted into its highly visible phase. A formidable display of force materialised on the streets and roads of Tshwane. Roadblocks were established, becoming meticulous checkpoints where officers conducted 289 vehicle searches and verified the status of 15 vehicles (all confirmed not to be stolen). Simultaneously, patrols saturated 10 identified crime hotspots, leading to 600 searches of individuals.

This visible presence yielded further results. In a targeted crackdown on drug-related activity, police arrested two suspects for possession of drugs after seizing 3 ziplock bags containing crystal meth, a substance plaguing local communities.

The operation also extended its reach to business compliance. Inspections of ten liquor outlets led to one establishment being shut down and fined for contravening the Liquor Act, with a substantial 481,570 millilitres of liquor seized. Furthermore, nine spaza shops were visited and inspected to ensure adherence to trading regulations.

Adding a critical immigration enforcement component, the Department of Home Affairs played a vital role, leading to the arrest of 37 individuals who were found to be in the country without legal status. These suspects were handed over to immigration officials for processing.

The impact was also felt on the roads, where traffic officials issued 28 AARTO infringement notices valued at R16,500 for various contraventions of the Road Traffic Act.

In closing, Major General Thine expressed his profound gratitude to all participating agencies, including the Tshwane Metro Police Department, the Department of Community Safety, the Department of Correctional Service, and the local Community Policing Forums.

“This achievement is not merely about numbers; it is about restoring a sense of security and order,” Major General Thine said. “The ongoing dedication and seamless cooperation between all these units are the bedrock of our mission to create safer communities for the residents of Tshwane. This is not the end, but a sustained promise of our commitment.”
