NSC Exams Hit Halfway Mark with ‘Smooth Administration’ and System Resilience

The Department of Basic Education has praised the smooth running of the matric finals, addressing concerns over Maths papers and urging communities to protect schools as zones of peace.

PRETORIA – The 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations have reached the halfway point with a strong record of “stability, integrity, and efficiency,” according to the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

In a statement issued on the progress of the exams, the department reported that the vast majority of sessions for over 920,000 candidates at 6,800 centres nationwide have proceeded without disruption, crediting the resilience of its systems and the dedication of officials and learners.

While a few isolated incidents, including community protests and minor technical issues, were reported, the DBE stated these were “swiftly and effectively managed” through established contingency plans.

DBE Addresses Maths Paper Concerns

The department directly addressed the public debate around the perceived difficulty of the 2025 Mathematics Paper 1 and Paper 2, seeking to reassure parents and learners.

“The DBE wishes to assure learners, parents, and the broader public that all NSC examination papers are carefully set to assess a full range of cognitive abilities,” the statement read.

It emphasized that the standardisation process overseen by the quality council, Umalusi, is designed to ensure no learner is unfairly disadvantaged. “Should any paper prove more challenging than expected, this process guarantees that No learner is unfairly disadvantaged.”

A Call for Continued Support

With the exams entering the final stretch, the DBE called on all communities to continue protecting schools as “zones of learning and peace.”

“Any form of protest or unrest that disrupts teaching, learning, or examination activities undermines the hard work and aspirations of thousands of learners nationwide,” the department cautioned.

Learners were encouraged to manage exam anxiety by maintaining a balanced routine, getting enough rest, and eating well. The department reminded them that “a positive mindset is their best tool for success,” expressing confidence that the exams will conclude successfully.
