CAPE TOWN – A disturbing video showing a Grade 10 learner being physically assaulted by a group of boys at Milnerton High School has ignited national fury, leading to the precautionary suspension of eight learners and prompting stern intervention from parliamentary officials.
The incident, which occurred on 16 October and circulated widely on social media days later, depicts the 16-year-old victim enduring physical violence and verbal abuse while onlookers fail to intervene. The graphic footage has thrust the issue of school safety and institutional accountability into the national spotlight.
School Takes Action Amid Mounting Pressure
In response to the public outcry, Milnerton High School principal Gert JP van Tonder announced that precautionary suspension letters have been issued to the eight learners implicated, pending a full investigation. The decision was ratified by the School Governing Body to ensure a fair and unimpeded inquiry.
“We want to make it clear that bullying, intimidation, and any form of assault cannot and will not be tolerated at Milnerton High School,” Van Tonder stated firmly. “These behaviours are completely contrary to the values of our school community and will always be dealt with firmly and fairly.”
The principal also addressed rumours of potential protest action, assuring parents that the situation is being closely monitored and that official channels will be used for all communication.
Mother’s Heartbreaking Account and Political Condemnation
The clip was brought to national attention by United Democratic Movement (UDM) member Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, who shared the video alongside a powerful statement from the victim’s mother.
In her account, the mother accused the school of failing to protect her son despite previous reports of bullying. “My son… has been subjected to bullying, physical assault, harassment, and emotional abuse by a group of boys, including some members of the school’s Rugby First Team,” she wrote. “I’m speaking out for my son, and for every student who has been silenced, dismissed, or ignored.”
The case has drawn condemnation from the highest levels of government. Joy Maimela, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, expressed her “utter horror and deep concern,” stating that the incident “borders on assault, a criminal offence that demands urgent and decisive action.”
A National Reckoning on Bullying
As the investigation continues, the school has assured the public that teaching and learning will proceed uninterrupted. However, the incident has reignited a critical national debate about the effectiveness of anti-bullying policies and the moral responsibility of schools to act decisively before such incidents escalate.
The case at Milnerton High serves as a stark reminder that for many learners, the schoolyard is not a place of safety, but one of fear—and that true accountability extends beyond suspensions to fundamental cultural change.
