N3 Closures Alert: SANRAL Warns of Major Disruptions in KwaZulu-Natal from 6 to 9 December for Bridge Work

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has issued a stringent travel alert for motorists, warning of significant, scheduled disruptions on the vital N3 corridor in KwaZulu-Natal from Friday, 6 December, through to Monday, 9 December. The closures are required for the high-precision placement of structural beams on the Langford Road bridge, a critical phase of the multi-billion rand N3 upgrade project between the Westville Viaduct and the Paradise Valley Interchange.

SANRAL’s geometrics specialist engineer, Jason Lowe, detailed the planned shutdowns, emphasising the non-negotiable nature of the work for long-term safety and infrastructure resilience. “This is a complex engineering operation that cannot be conducted with live traffic flowing beneath it,” Lowe explained. “We will be implementing full road closures in both directions at specific times to allow for the safe lifting and placement of these large bridge beams.”

The closure schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, 6 December (20:00) to Saturday, 7 December (10:00): Full closure of the N3 southbound (towards Durban).
  • Saturday, 7 December (20:00) to Sunday, 8 December (10:00): Full closure of the N3 northbound (towards Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg).

During these periods, all traffic will be强制 diverted onto clearly signposted alternative routes. SANRAL has advised that heavy vehicles, in particular, must adhere strictly to these designated diversions, as many local roads are unsuitable for their size and weight.

The timing of the work, on the cusp of the peak festive season travel period, has raised concerns about compounded congestion. The N3 is the primary economic artery linking the port of Durban with the Gauteng heartland and is already experiencing a noticeable increase in holiday traffic volume.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience, especially at this time of year, but this work is essential to the broader upgrade which will ultimately improve safety, capacity, and travel reliability on this crucial corridor,” Lowe stated. He urged all travellers to incorporate the delays into their plans. “The key messages are: plan ahead, leave significantly earlier than usual, and please, follow the official diversion routes. Patience and careful driving will be essential for everyone’s safety.”

Motorist advocacy groups have echoed the call for planning, warning that failure to heed the alerts could result in severe delays and frustration. “This isn’t a typical weekend slowdown; this is a full closure of a national freeway,” said Reggie Naidoo of the KZN Road Users Association. “We are strongly advising people to consider travelling outside of the closure windows if possible, or to use the N2 as an alternative long-distance route, though that will also be busier.”

SANRAL has committed to deploying additional traffic management teams and working closely with the South African Police Service and emergency services to monitor the situation and respond to any incidents. Real-time updates will be provided via SANRAL’s social media channels and traffic information services.

The Langford Road bridge work is a pivotal component of the wider N3 upgrade, designed to alleviate a notorious bottleneck and improve the road’s structural integrity to handle ever-increasing freight and passenger volumes. While this weekend’s pain is acute, authorities stress it is a necessary step towards the long-term gain of a more efficient and safer national road network.
