N2 Reopened West of Gqeberha After Wildfires Contained in Nelson Mandela Bay

A major arterial route is flowing again after a multi-agency firefighting force won a critical battle against a fierce wildfire, bringing a temporary but severe disruption to one of the Eastern Cape’s most vital transport corridors to an end.

The N2 highway, the crucial national road linking Gqeberha to the Garden Route and the Western Cape, was reopened to traffic late Wednesday afternoon. This followed a gruelling, day-long operation by ground crews and aerial support to contain a fast-moving veld fire that had erupted along the road west of the city, near the communities of Seaview and Blue Horizon Bay.

The fire, fanned by relentless, gusting winds, forced authorities to implement a full closure of the N2 in both directions during the height of the blaze on Wednesday morning. The decision, described by officials as “non-negotiable for public safety,” was made due to near-zero visibility from thick, acrid smoke and the very real danger of the flames jumping across the road. The closure caused significant traffic diversions, stranding some freight trucks and forcing motorists onto lengthy alternative routes through local suburbia.

“The intensity of the fire, combined with the strong wind, created an extremely volatile and dangerous situation,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Chief Fire Officer, Eugene Johnson. “Our primary objectives were to prevent loss of life, protect property in the adjacent areas, and establish firebreaks to stop the spread. The closure of the N2 was a necessary step to allow our teams to work effectively and to protect motorists.”

Firefighters from NMBM, alongside teams from Working on Fire and neighbouring Kouga Municipality, battled the flames from the ground while helicopters and a fixed-wing aircraft performed repeated water-bombing sorties. The coordinated effort successfully prevented the fire from reaching residential properties, though several hectares of coastal fynbos and grassland were destroyed.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. However, authorities noted that the region is experiencing tinder-dry conditions following a period of low rainfall and high summer temperatures, creating an environment where a single spark can lead to a runaway inferno.

“We appeal to the public to exercise extreme caution. The conditions are still ripe for fires,” warned Johnson. “We ask residents and travellers to avoid any open flames, to ensure cigarette butts are properly extinguished, and to report any sign of smoke immediately.”

While the highway is now open, authorities have urged motorists to remain vigilant when travelling through the area, as emergency vehicles may still be present and light smoke could persist. Minor delays are possible as crews remain on high alert for flare-ups.

The successful containment marks a relief for the region’s logistics and tourism sectors, which depend on the unimpeded flow of the N2. It also stands as a testament to the skill and coordination of the emergency services, who averted what could have been a far more devastating disaster.
