A lion that escaped from a moving truck on the R49 between Lichtenburg and Zeerust on Monday has been safely recaptured, authorities have confirmed.
The animal was being transported from the Free State to Nietverdiend in Ramotshere Moiloa when it reportedly broke free from the trailer. Its escape caused a temporary safety scare for motorists in the area.
The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) assured the public that the situation is now under control.
“There is no cause for alarm. The animal has been safely captured and secured,” said department spokesperson Jeremiah Matebesi.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the escape and to assess potential violations of the transport permit. Preliminary findings suggest there were possible infringements.
“The full investigation will assess whether the owner complied with all relevant legislation, including the South African National Standards (SANS 1884-3), which govern the transportation, handling, and welfare of carnivores,” Matebesi stated.
These standards specify requirements for cage and vehicle design, handling procedures, and animal welfare during transport. Authorities will also verify compliance with a key permit condition mandating public liability insurance, which holds the owner accountable for any damages caused by an escaped animal.
“Severe action will be taken against the permit holder if violations are found,” Matebesi added.
The department has urged all wildlife transporters and game farmers to strictly adhere to permit conditions and safety protocols, emphasizing that compliance is crucial for public and animal safety.
