KZN’s Unity Government Teeters as Kingmaker NFP Threatens Exit, Losing Confidence in Premier

KwaZulu-Natal’s fledgling Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) is facing a severe crisis that threatens its very existence, as the kingmaking National Freedom Party (NFP) has declared its “willingness to leave” the coalition.

In a scathing statement, NFP President Ivan Barnes announced the party has lost confidence in IFP Premier Thami Ntuli, citing a “steady erosion of public trust,” financial mismanagement, and “unnecessary international trips.” The NFP, which holds a single but crucial seat that secures the GPU’s majority, accused its major partners—the IFP and ANC—of lacking the “honesty and integrity” required for genuine cooperation.

“The founding principles… were anchored on clean and transparent governance… [but] recent events stand in stark contrast,” Barnes stated. He pointed to a failure to review the performance of political deployees and self-serving behavior in municipalities as key reasons for the breakdown.

The NFP’s threat opens the door for a potential realignment of power in the province. Barnes suggested that the MK Party, which won the largest share of the vote in the recent elections, should be allowed “to take a leading role in any future provincial governance formation.”

Political analysts suggest that if the NFP follows through, it could align with the ANC and MKP to pass a motion of no confidence against Premier Ntuli, effectively collapsing the current GPU. The Premier’s office, however, has responded by saying the government remains “steadfastly focused” on its service delivery mandate and stands “firm, cohesive, and unwavering.”
