KZN Residents Advised to Take Precautions as Heatwave Intensifies

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal, particularly those in Durban and surrounding areas, have been urged to take extra precautions as the province experiences excessively high temperatures.

Maximum temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 30s, with conditions feeling even hotter due to high humidity levels. Emergency services warn that when humidity is factored in, temperatures can feel closer to 40 degrees Celsius, significantly increasing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for one of KwaZulu-Natal’s private ambulance services, has strongly advised residents to increase their water intake and remain vigilant during the heatwave.

“Dehydration occurs much faster than many people realise,” Jamieson said. “It’s important to drink plenty of fluids—especially water—to replace what the body loses through sweating. This is particularly critical for people engaging in physical activity or heavy labour.”

Jamieson emphasised that vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children and animals, require special attention during extreme heat conditions. He warned that these groups are more susceptible to dehydration, which can lead to serious medical complications if not addressed promptly.

Health authorities also advise residents to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, wear light clothing, and seek shade where possible. Pet owners are encouraged to ensure animals have constant access to clean water and cool, shaded areas.

Emergency services remain on high alert and have urged the public to seek medical assistance immediately should signs of heat exhaustion or severe dehydration occur
